It falls into seven clans: Eke, Udi, Owa, Ebe, Afa, Oye and Ngwo, with Eke (Umuosie), Udi (Umuaneke), Owa (Osie Akuli, Umuezeagu), Ebe (Ojebe Ogene) and Afa (Uku Ugunye).
The clans are unequal. Eke has 3 local communities, Udi 8, Owa 7, Ebe 7, Afa 5 and Oye 5, while Ngwo is a single village group. The towns named for them are Nsude, Eke and Obioma; Udi with Abia, Amokwe, Nachi, Obinagu, Agbodu, Umuabi and Umuaga; Owa with two unnamed communities beside it, Umuana with two more, then Umumba and Obunofia; Ebe with Abor, Ukana, Awhum, Okpatu, Umulumbe and Umuawka; Egede, Afa, Akpakume, Nze and Owhu; Oye with the less closely related Olo, Awha and Okpoho; and Elugu Ngwo, one of the villages of the Ngwo group and the settlement after which the township of Enugu is named.
The clan names Nsude, the leading town of its Eke clan, as the place it descends from. Individual sections also claim kinship outside the clan: the Ebe clan counts Ukehe of the Igbodo group as related, the Afa clan claims Ukpata, Adabe and Ukume of the Umulokpa group of the Nri-Awka section, and the Oye clan also claims Umulokpa. On the Nri-Awka side the Umulokpa group is in turn derived from the Abaja clan.
Abaja is counted in the northern section of the eastern uplands, and the plains of southern Nkanu were peopled in part from Abaja Udi. Two of its clans, Eke and Udi, speak dialects reckoned nearer to Owerri Igbo than to the speech of the Nri-Awka or Onitsha groups.
