The group is counted in the northern section of the eastern uplands, the old settlement area focused at or near Nsukka, whose northern part the Igala overran and altered culturally and which developed an elaborate political structure with a graded title system and village headship under an Eze. Forde & Jones record no towns, no migration tradition and no relationship with neighbouring groups for Achi.
