Its towns are Nnewi, Orifite and Ichi.
The Nnewi district was colonised from the western uplands by large village groups that had gained a reputation for warfare in the past. Agbaja is the first of the four groups, the neighbouring groups, assigned to that district.
Men from the village groups around Nri and Awka, extending to Nnewi and other villages of the district, went abroad mainly as doctors, craftsmen and market traders, and migration on a small scale went from the south of the Nnewi district to the Cameroons plantations.
