Ayamelum, also called Aghamelum, is the clan of the Omambala country in the Anambra valley, whose communities came into it from the Nsukka side of Igboland.
Ayamelum, also called Aghamelum, is a clan of the Omambala country in the Anambra valley, in present-day Anambra State, on the border with Enugu State. Its communities are Anaku, Omor, Umumbo, Umuerum, Umueje, Omasi, Igbakwu and Ifite Ogwari, and they are known for their food crops, Anaku, Ifite Ogwari, Umumbo and Omor especially for rice.
The name is the tell of where they came from. The Aghamelum communities are remembered as having been driven out of the Nsukka side of Igboland by the Igala raids of Onoja Oboli, and as having come the length of the valley to the eastern flank of Omambala, where Aghamelum is what they were called. They are one of the clans that carry the Omambala heritage, the heritage of the Anambra river and the country it runs through.
Only one of its communities, Omu, is named, and the area was thinly peopled until recently; the villages the local government lists today are the eight above.
