Its towns are Aku and Ukehe. Eight further small local communities are mentioned without being named. The group belongs to the northern section of the eastern uplands.
The speech of the eastern part of the area stands nearer to Owerri Igbo than to that of the Nri-Awka or Onitsha groups. Forde & Jones give no origin tradition for Igbodo.
Afigbo quotes an officer's report of the early 1930s that, apart from Umuna and Ohebe, no two villages of the Igbodo group claimed a common ancestor, every founder being assumed to have come out of the ground. He also records that the populous Aku village-group harried its neighbours for slaves and land, and that this made the rest of the group look to Ukehe for protection, since it alone had the numbers to stand up to Aku.
