It is a large trading town together with seven villages.
Oguta is one of the six groups lying between the Orashi and Sombreiro rivers which formerly acknowledged the overlordship of Aboh.
Afigbo records that the Royal Niger Company's push upstream met the Aro sphere of influence at its inner edge, around Oguta, and that Goldie several times considered sending troops against the Aro. Behind Oguta the Aro, trading on fear of the oracle, cut the Company's palm-oil purchases at Atani from 250 to 110 puncheons a month and stopped women cracking kernels by placing a juju on them.
