Ethnic Tensions and the Anioma Igbo: Asaba and Aboh Residents’ Protest for Protection in Midwestern Nigeria

The people of Asaba and Aboh divisions residing in Benin City, within the Midwestern region of Nigeria, have lodged protests to the military governor, Lt. Col. David Ejoor, over the attacks they faced during recent anti-Igbo demonstrations. These incidents occurred in the tense political climate of the time, where ethnic divisions were heightened, and the Igbo community in many parts of Nigeria became targets of violence.
Asaba and Aboh, part of the western Igbo group known as Anioma, had significant populations living in the Midwestern region. Despite their longstanding presence in the region, they became victims of the broader anti-Igbo sentiment that arose during this period. Their protest to Governor Ejoor reflected their demand for protection and justice in the face of hostility and aggression.
