Histories about Ukawe

The archive links no published history to Ukawe yet. Its neighbours’ histories are not shown here, because a link to another community is not a history of this one.

Histories that mention Ukawe

These are published records whose own words name Ukawe. A mention is not a history of Ukawe, which is why they are listed here rather than with the histories about it.

Read as: Ukawe, Ukawu. Counted where the name is written with a capital, because a lower-case occurrence of a name that is also an ordinary word is the word.

It has the same brief entry as Ugulangu, the two being clans recorded as having broken away from Ezza, the largest group of the section. As with Ugulangu, it is a village group although it is also treated as a clan, and its own subdivisions and towns are not recorded.

Its settlement pattern, like that of the other communities entered as village groups in this section, is described as similar to that of village groups in the Eastern Plains rather than the hamlet pattern of the section's five large groups. Otherwise Forde & Jones add nothing specific for Ukawe: a growing population and too little land are reported for the area as a whole, with expansion possible only northward, into drier country, where settlers from Ezza have taken up pepper and groundnuts.

Afigbo names Ukawe with Okposi, Ikwo and Ezza among the peoples the British, based at Afikpo and Obubra Hill, were trying to reach an understanding with before the Ezza turned their emissaries away.

Where it is: Ebonyi State, Onicha local government area. The Onicha local government area names Ukawu among its communities; Ukawe is the earlier spelling of it.

The archive holds no photographs, recordings or documents filed to Ukawe yet, so this section is empty rather than filled with something else.

Corrections to a community record are reviewed before they are published, and a published record is never silently replaced. The review trail stays visible.
