Traditional-Highlife Music in Delta State, particularly in Igbo speaking areas, there’s a legendary musician everyone knows -Ogbogu Okonji. He is the “Ekobe-Highlife” king, and it makes the Anioma region and the Southeast shake with his music.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Ogbogu Okonji grew up in Igbuzor, where culture and music thrive. Since he was young, he has showcased his talent; he gathers young children and plays music for adults to come and watch because of how he sings well and dances. Then, pursuing music in Nigeria was a serious issue, but Ogbogu followed his heart. He sings in the Enuani and Ukwani languages, which are full of proverbs and culture.

Musical Career and Achievements

He started his music career in 1978. He collaborated with Agility Okonji, and they both released albums that changed things, such as their song advocating for electricity in Ibusa, which led to the town’s electrification in 1979.
After he left Customs and Excise, Ogbogu dived deep into music, forming “Ogbogu Okonji and his Anioma International Band.” They’ve released over thirty albums, mixing old Anioma sounds with modern style. He uses instruments like “Uboma,” “Isaka” (Maracas), and “Akepele” (native flute) to preserve traditional music and keep it fresh.

Musical Style and Impact

Ogbogu fuses traditional highlife with contemporary rhythms, making his music enjoyable for all. His songs address life issues, earning him the nickname “The Message Man” for using lyrics to highlight societal ills. His band members are all from Anioma, adding authenticity and sweetness to their music, which features proverb recitations like “Akpatanu.”

Legacy and Recognition

Despite Ogbogu’s immense contributions to Anioma and Igbo culture at large, he hasn’t received a chieftaincy title, although many feel he deserves one. His impact runs deep, not only entertaining but also preserving culture, making him a significant figure in Igbo music history.

Ogbogu Okonji is proof that music can transform lives and culture. As young fans await his recognition, his music remains entertaining, teaching, and connecting, ensuring the Anioma sound endures.
