Isiokpo, the ancestral and the spiritual clan of the Ikwerre people have a unique carnival that is celebrated yearly. “The Isiokpo Bicycle Carnival”, A unique and colourful annual event celebrated in Isiokpo, the capital of Ikwerre Local Government Area in Rivers State, Nigeria. This festival, typically celebrated in late December, highlights the rich cultural heritage of the Ikwerre people, a subgroup of the Igbo ethnic group, through vibrant displays of traditional attire, music, and, notably, bicycle parades.

Historical Significance

Bicycles have long been integral to the daily life of the Isiokpo community, serving as a primary means of transportation and a tool for conveying farm produce. The carnival celebrates this enduring relationship, highlighting the bicycle’s role in the socio-economic development of the region. Participants beautify their bicycles with colourful decorations, reflecting the community’s creativity and deep-seated traditions.
