Why a Hawk kills Chickens

Why a Hawk kills Chickens
A hawk stands over a chicken it has caught.

A long time ago, in the land of the chickens, there was a beautiful hen. One day, a powerful hawk saw her and decided he wanted to marry her. He went to the hen’s parents and paid the bride price. Knowing the hawk’s strength, the parents accepted, and the hen married him.

The hawk took the hen to his home, where they lived for a while. But soon, the hen started missing her old life and the sounds of the chickens. Meanwhile, a rooster from the hen’s family came looking for her. When he saw her, he was enchanted by her beauty and began to crow loudly. The hen couldn’t resist the rooster’s sweet song, so she left her husband, the hawk, and followed the rooster back to the chicken’s land.

When the hawk found out that his wife had left him, he was very angry. He went to the hen’s parents and demanded his bride price back. But they didn’t have enough to repay him. Feeling cheated, the hawk took the matter to the King of the Animals. After listening to both sides, the King decided that the hawk could take his revenge. The hawk was allowed to kill and eat any of the rooster’s chicks to pay back for the lost bride.

The rooster could do nothing, and from that day on, the hawk would always swoop down and take a chicken chick whenever he saw one, as a reminder of the bride price that was never returned.
