Ezenmo: The Festival of Unity and Purification

Ezenmo festival celebration in Ukwuani, is a triennial festival in the community of Umusadege in Utagba Ogbe, it extends across across various Nsukwa clans of Ukwuani as well . Its observed to be more than a mere spectacle but also a profound community event that aims towards promoting unity, cleansing of the land and appeasing spirit beings. This gracious festival which occurs in the month March, it also serves as a gathering where the people commune and pass judgments, this is also the period when protection is being invoked via the masquerade’s majestic presence.

 

The appearance of Ezenmo masquerade is a wonderful sight to behold as it embodies the regal essence of a throne. The beautiful to behold masquerade is draped in an ankle-length garment with red color, it also has a touch of white in its neck, the costume of Ezenmo is a symbol of collective spirit of the community fore fathers, there by bridging realms of the dead and the living. The Ezenmo mask is devoid of intricate carvings as it uses basic geometric forms to evoke an air of the extraordinary and solemnity, reflecting the festival’s double nature of reverence and celebration.
