The archive links no published history to Owerri yet. Its neighbours’ histories are not shown here, because a link to another community is not a history of this one.

Histories that mention Owerri
These are published records whose own words name Owerri. A mention is not a history of Owerri, which is why they are listed here rather than with the histories about it.
Read as: Owerri. Counted where the name is written with a capital, because a lower-case occurrence of a name that is also an ordinary word is the word. Showing the 48 most recent of 74 records that name it.

The group is the town of Owerri together with four smaller village groups, which are not named. The Oratta entry in this file covers that group as a whole, of which this is one part.
Forde & Jones record no origin tradition for Owerri itself, and nothing further is said about how its four smaller village groups are composed.
The Oratta-Ikwerri groups as a whole are described as having abundant land, wealth drawn from palm kernels and oil, from food sold to the more crowded districts nearby, and from tolls on travellers, with farming done by both men and women.
